We all know that the fashion industry is polluting but what are we doing about it?   What are the impacts on the environment and what steps are in place to combat this?

Alexander Burkhill from the Met Office interviews Future Fibres Network Plus Project Lead, Professor Tamara Galloway, as part of their Climate Conversations.  She gives you insights about how we are embedding environmental sciences into the heart of the fashion industry.

Tamara answers questions such as:

  • How can we recycle wetsuits?
  • How can we make premium products out of waste materials such as pineapple leaves?
  • What is ‘permastink’ and how do we increase athletic attire’s longevity?
  • Do sequins harm aquatic life?
  • Can we create a syllabus to educate the designers and scientists of the future to ensure textiles are designed with end-of-life in mind?
  • Did you know how polluting the dyeing process can be?

These and other questions such as how to improve our recycling capabilities in the UK are discussed in this informative video interview below.

She sheds light on the impacts of the fashion industry on our marine environment and oceans. But more positively she also shares details on the work that is taking place to decarbonise the industry.

Thanks to recent UKRI funding The Future Fibres Network Plus Project are working with industry and scientists to ensure a positive legacy in education and embedding circular economy thinking across the supply chain.
