5 June 2024Event Summary
On Wednesday 22 May Professor Tamara Galloway and the Future Fibres team welcomed guests from industry, business, design and academia in London at the stunning Design Museum. This was the first event for the project and she highlighted the environmental damage currently caused by the fashion and textiles industry and emphasised the importance of collaboration for sustainably transforming the sector: “We want to embed Environmental Science ideas into design so that we can design out some of the problems in the system and come up with solutions that will create a better industry for the future.” The morning session was chaired by BBC journalist Vic Gill who emphasised the necessity for positive storytelling to ensure engagement. We saw presentations from the team and industry highlighting some of the challenges but also by contrast presenting innovative solutions. The community in both the morning and afternoon sessions had multiple opportunities to raise issues, ask questions and discuss solutions together and in smaller groups in the workshop sessions.
Tamara also announced the UKRI funding call which is now live. “ We want to seed a vibrant programme of research development and innovation.”
